"being with you and being without you is the only way i have to measure time”. jorge luis borges. in accordance with borges’ words, i propose a method of measuring time : how to measure the subjective force of time by the absence and presence of others. this series uses ritual to archive and document ‘time’ with and without another. these portraits are screenshots taken from every video call i have made via skype. the portraits in this series contribute to a larger body of work entitled 'sentimental technology', which investigates the affects of technology on relationships. the lo-resolution images made from these conversations represent an expanse of time in place of units of seconds, hours, months, or years. although, geographically the person with whom i am speaking can not be geographically present, the advancement of technology allows us interaction in a different way where we can be 'with' and 'without' our loved ones simultaneously.
